Several traditions exist about the origin of the surname. Among them the story of the Erkota (ერკოტა) monk, recorded in 1961, and the tale of the three brothers, which has an academic recorder, deserve particular attention. None of these tales is documentary history, though they are genuine specimens of folk memory. The three-brothers legend is a folk attempt to explain why one and the same surname is found in different parts of Georgia. The Erkota record describes only the origin of a single village lineage. Linguistics explains the abundance of the surname quite differently, by the rise of independent hearths.
The monk of Erkota
One of the main texts of the whole tradition is the tale of the Erkota (ერკოტა) monk, written down in 1961. It is a genuine field record. According to it, during an invasion of the Tatars a monk fled from Zarzma (ზარზმა), took a wife in the village of Erkota, turned to farming and still secretly celebrated the liturgy. He was written down under the surname Beridze (ბერიძე). The record wrongly places Erkota in the Akhaltsikhe (ახალციხე) district. In fact the village lies in Aspindza (ასპინძა) municipality. The text is not a historical document, but it keeps a specific geographical area and reflects the surroundings in which the bearers of the lineage lived.
დიალექტოლოგია, I, 362)

The monk of ერკოტა who fled Zarzma during a "Tatar" invasion, married, farmed, served the liturgy secretly დარბაზებში, and was written down as ბერიძე; lineage called ზარზგიენთ → ზანდარიენთ
Folklore, recorded in ქართული დიალექტოლოგია I (1961), p. 362. A genuine field record with a named village and living lineage names — say that too; it earns respect without granting it historicity. The 1961 record misplaces the village in "Akhaltsikhe district"; it is Aspindza.

Living folklore, recorded 29 Oct 2022 from 75. Valuable as folklore and for the lineage names it preserves.
Three brothers
The second main tradition of the surname, about three brother-monks, was recorded by the researcher Ilia Maisuradze (ილია მაისურაძე) in 1965 and 1979. In this version, during a plague the monks of Zarzma (ზარზმა) were ordered to multiply. After that three brothers went to Adjara, Meskheti and Guria. The tale has no historical basis, but it does have an academic recorder. It is a folk attempt to explain why one surname is found in three different regions. Linguistics explains the same fact quite differently, by the existence of independent hearths of the surname.

The three brother-monks sent to Achara, Meskheti and Guria during a plague
Legend, not a historical source. Earliest recording: Ilia Maisuradze's 1939 field notes at Erkota (Samtskhe-Javakheti Historical Museum, manuscript M 100, p. 145), quoted by M. Beridze 2009: after a plague the Zarzma monks were told to multiply, and three brothers went to Erkota, Guria and Adjara. It is the folk explanation for one surname in three regions; linguistics explains it otherwise.

კახაბერიძე and გულაბერიძე "split from the Beridzes"; Giorgi III granted a Beridze the name კახაბერიძე
Family tradition (Bakar Batonishvili via Sharadze; Chkhataraishvili 1959) — contradicted by the independent medieval attestation of კახაბერისძე in the ტბეთის სულთა მატიანე and by ნიკოლოზ გულაბერისძე in the 10th–11th c.
Evidence
All these tales belong to grade D, that is, oral tradition, and cannot count as historical fact. The field records must still be respected, because they are part of living folklore. The 1961 Erkota (ერკოტა) tale names the lineage Zandarienti (ზანდარიენთი), earlier called Zarzgienti (ზარზგიენთი). A 2022 interview records Gigolienti (გიგოლიენთი), Sosanienti (სოსანიენთი), Khushutienti (ხუშუტიენთი), Alajienti (ალაჯიენთი), Qaratlienti (ყარათლიენთი) and Cholaghienti (ჩოლაღიენთი). These lineages are still alive, and families are still called by these names today. The names are living facts about folk memory. So the legends cannot be granted historicity. There is no reason to reject them either, because they are valuable ethnographic material.

Beriebi
The tradition about the village of Beriebi (ბერიები) deserves particular attention. It is the firmest folk claim among the existing traditions. According to it, today's Beridzes (ბერიძე) of Aspindza (ასპინძა) came from Beriebi, and the Beridzes of Upper Adjara also appear to be former Meskhetians. This version stands apart because it names a specific place instead of miracles and proposes a probable migration route from Meskheti to Upper Adjara. The migration is not documented. Even so, the linguistic argument for polygenesis has to take this folk version into account and answer it.

The Aspindza Beridzes "come from ბერიები"
Oral tradition — but the strongest folk claim in the corpus, because it names a place and proposes a route (Meskheti → Upper Adjara) rather than a miracle. No charter, defter or census connects Beriebi to any Adjaran Beridze.
Akho
In Adjara the three-brother tale is not tied to the Beridzes (ბერიძე) alone. It is a widespread genre there. For example, in the village of Akho (ახო) in Keda (ქედა) municipality, where Beridzes also live today, local tradition holds Nakashidze (ნაკაშიძე) to be the oldest surname. Akho has its own legend of three brothers, Gurdzai (გურძაი), Kuchulai (კუჭულაი) and Samunai (სამუნაი), and it has no connection with the Beridzes at all. Tales of three founding brothers are found in various parts of Adjara. Gathering them in one place and assigning them to the Beridze surname alone would artificially create a tradition that does not in fact exist.

Every Adjaran three-brother legend as a Beridze legend
At ახო the oldest surname by tradition is ნაკაშიძე, and its three-brother tale (გურძაი, კუჭულაი, სამუნაი) is not attached to the Beridzes.
Imereti and Kartli
No tradition about the origin of the Beridzes (ბერიძე) is known from Imereti or Kartli. Every known legend comes only from Meskheti, Guria, Adjara, Svaneti or the Russian emigration. The documents that survive in Kartli and Imereti mostly name serfs and monastery servants, and in some cases people of high rank. Yet the research found no founding legend there, and no lineage name or family memory either.
