დიალექტოლოგია, I, 362)

rendering, not the wording of the record

In Meskheti (Akhaltsikhe district) there is the following legend about Beridze: "Most of the village of Erkota are Beridzes by surname, who descend from a single monk (beri). At the time of the Tatar invasion this monk fled from Zarzma; so that the Tatars would not suspect him, he took a wife in the village of Erkota and turned to farming, but in secret, in the hall-houses (darbazi), he still used to celebrate the liturgy. As a surname he was written down as Beridze. Today this kin is called Zandarients, and earlier still they were called Zarzgients" (Georgian Dialectology, I, 362)

Claims

  • B-013 D tradition supports

A Meskhetian legend (recorded in ქართული დიალექტოლოგია, vol. I, p. 362) says that most of the village ერკოტი near ახალციხე are ბერიძეები descended from a single monk who fled ზარზმა monastery during a Tatar invasion, married in ერკოტი, took up farming while secretly continuing to serve the liturgy, and was recorded under the surname ბერიძე; his lineage was nicknamed ზანდარიენთი (earlier ზარზგიენთი). A second, unreferenced variant retold on Georgian Wikipedia says three brother-monks of ზარზმა were ordered to leave and raise families during a plague, one settling in აჭარა, one in მესხეთი and one in გურია, all recorded as ბერიძე. Neither variant is documentary history; they are origin tales of one Meskhetian village lineage.
