The history of the Beridzes (ბერიძე) in Adjara (აჭარა) is complex and has many layers. The claim that the surname dates here from the 16th century is not borne out by documents, because the hereditary surname Beridze cannot be found in the Ottoman tax registers (defters) of 1566–1574 (A). Under Ottoman rule Beridzes were known by various names, which in the view of researchers points to branch lineages splitting off from one surname (A). Today Beridzes live in many villages in all five municipalities of Adjara. The named lists of the 20th century show plainly the tragic fate of the people who bore the surname.
Where they live
Adjara (აჭარა) is the largest population centre of the Beridzes (ბერიძე). Official data for 2012 counted 16,173 Beridzes in the region. Khulo (ხულო) is often taken to be the main home of the surname, but the figures for 1995 show the opposite. Most Beridzes lived in Khelvachauri (ხელვაჩაური, 3,703), Kobuleti (ქობულეთი, 2,706), Batumi (ბათუმი, 2,517) and Keda (ქედა, 2,502), and in each of these they were the most common surname. In Shuakhevi (შუახევი, 1,638) the surname was second, and in Khulo (1,126) only fifth (A). The main base of the Beridzes is therefore not highland Khulo but Lower Adjara and the coast. Today Beridze families live in dozens of villages across all five municipalities of Adjara (A).

Defters
The documentary picture is clear. The published Ottoman tax registers (defters) of Adjara (აჭარა) do not record Beridze (ბერიძე) as a hereditary surname. The detailed defter of 1566–1574 has only forms built on the root: Beruli (ბერული), Beruki (ბერუკი) and Tavberi (თავბერი). In Kveda Kurdza (ქვედა კურძა) the suffix -uli (-ული) stands in the place of a second name, not of a shortened surname. As for Zesopeli (ზესოფელი), the same defter shows that the ispenje tax (ისფენჯი) there was paid by five named heads of household, and not one of them is a Beridze (A). The view that Beridzes have lived in Adjara without a break since the 16th century therefore has no support in the written sources (A).

Under Ottoman rule the Beridzes (ბერიძე) of Adjara (აჭარა) were known by various bynames ending in -oghli (-ოღლი). This points to separate branch lineages splitting off from one large surname (A). According to local tradition, the Beridzes who settled in Gegelidzeebi (გეგელიძეები) and Kokotauri (კოკოტაური) were called the Abuketeloghlebi (აბუქეთელოღლები) (D). In Gobroneti (გობრონეთი) a branch of the Koroghlebi (ქოროღლები) is attested in the historical record (A), and those living in Dzentsmani (ძენწმანი) were called the Sarajoghlebi (სარაჯოღლები) (B/D). Branches named Beridze-Akhmedoghli (ბერიძე-ახმედოღლი) and Beridze-Dautoghli (ბერიძე-დაუთოღლი) are also known. The Beridzes living in Furtio (ფურტიო) and Oladauri (ოლადაური) were called the Qadisanebi (ყადისანები), a name linked to that of Nuri Efendi's (ნური ეფენდი) father, Ahmed "Inja Qadi" (აჰმედ „ინჯა ყადი“) (B).

Lists
The 20th century brought the Beridzes (ბერიძე) of Adjara (აჭარა) hard trials. The 1937 list of the repressed from Zesopeli (ზესოფელი) names six Beridzes: Abdul son of Memed, Murad, Nuri, Mukhamed, Khulus and Remzi (A). The 1951 list of deportees has ten names: Khusein son of Mejid (Gobroneti, გობრონეთი), Tevfiq son of Kerem and Khasia son of Ismail (Akho, ახო), Osman son of Ali (Tskhmorisi, ცხმორისი), Eub son of Akhmed (Kharaula, ხარაულა), Fezli son of Khemid and Qebas son of Khemid (Zvare, ზვარე), Khulus son of Akhmed, Memed son of Qavtan and Khemid son of Arif (Zesopeli) (A). Behind these lists stand human tragedies. Zekie Beridze (ზექიე ბერიძე), aged 102, recalled how her husband Nuri and his brother Mukhamed were arrested. Mukhamed was shot and Nuri was deported (C).

Nuri Efendi
Tedo Sakhokia (თედო სახოკია) wrote of Nuri Efendi Beridze (ნური ეფენდი ბერიძე) that he „ქართულად წმინდად ლაპარაკობს“ [rendering: speaks pure Georgian] (A). In October 1915 he opened a school in his own house in Oladauri (ოლადაური). A press notice of 1916 says he was the teacher of religion and that „ყველას ეჩიჩინება: შვილები ქართულ სკოლაში აღზარდეთო“ [rendering: he keeps urging everyone to bring up their children in the Georgian school] (A). The school's first pupil, Memed Mikeladze (მემედ მიქელაძე), recalled: „ქართულ და რუსულ ენებს გურული მასწავლებელი ილიკო ნაცვალაძე გვასწავლიდა, არაბულს კი – ოლადაურელი ნური ეფენდი, ყადი ახმედის ძე ბერიძე“ [rendering: Georgian and Russian were taught to us by Iliko Natsvaladze, a teacher from Guria, and Arabic by Nuri Efendi of Oladauri, Beridze, son of Qadi Akhmed] (A).

Generations
The Furtio–Oladauri (ფურტიო-ოლადაური) branch of the Beridzes (ბერიძე) is the only one whose unbroken line can be traced through six successive generations. The line runs as follows: Ahmed "Inja Qadi" Beridze (აჰმედ „ინჯა ყადი“ ბერიძე), his son Nuri Efendi (ნური ეფენდი), Nuri's son Nusredin (ნუსრედინ), who was shot in 1938, Nusredin's children Asie (ასიე) and Niaz (ნიაზ) Beridze, and Asie's grandson Daniel Beridze (დანიელ ბერიძე) (B). Other known people are linked to the history of this family. Nuri Efendi's nephew Yusuf Beridze (იუსუფ ბერიძე) headed the Skhalta (სხალთა) community, and Nuri's sons-in-law were Husein Tavdgiridze (ჰუსეინ თავდგირიძე) and Alisultan Geladze (ალისულთან გელაძე) (A). This six-generation tree rests on family documents.
