pending · 2026-10-01Context

rendering, not the wording of the record

A member of the Khulo majlis (mejlisi) hosted us with pure Georgian hospitality. Around here he is considered a learned man, which is why he holds the title of efendi. He speaks pure Georgian. He knows Mr Chichinadze, the pioneer of bringing Georgian books into Adjara.

(Qadi Nuri Efendi Beridze), an Istanbul-educated jurist who served as judge (qadi) of the ხულო district and was son-in-law of the scholar ჰაჯი ლომან ეფენდი ქარცივაძე, initiated the first Georgian school in the village of ოლადაური (Upper Adjara). It opened in October 1915 under the Society for Spreading Literacy among Georgians; Beridze gave his own house for the school and taught there alongside its first teacher, ილია ნაცვალაძე. (Some sources give 1914 or 1916 for the opening.) The opposition to muhajir emigration after 1878 that is sometimes linked to the family is attributed by the sources to his father-in-law, ლომან ეფენდი ქარცივაძე, not to Nuri Beridze himself.
