Nuri Efendi Beridze

Son of ახმედ „ინჯა ყადი" ბერიძე of ფურტიო; Istanbul-trained pupil and son-in-law of ჰაჯი ლომან ეფენდი ქარცივაძე; judge of the მარეთის ხევი, qadi of all Upper Adjara from 1880 and of ხულო uezd under Russia; member of the Khulo mejlis and the titles commission; guided ჭიჭინაძე and სახოკია across Upper Adjara; initiated the first Georgian school at ოლადაური, which opened in October 1915 in his own house (ვ. მაქარაძე gives 1 October; other sources give 1914 or 1916, and K22 hedges accordingly). The first pupil, მემედ მიქელაძე, recalled in 1977 that fourteen boys entered, the course was four years, and „ქართულ და რუსულ ენებს გურული მასწავლებელი ილიკო ნაცვალაძე გვასწავლიდა, არაბულს კი – ოლადაურელი ნური ეფენდი, ყადი ახმედის ძე ბერიძე" — so he taught Arabic on a named pupil's testimony (C0690), while the contemporary press notice of 22 April 1916 calls him the school's სჯულის მასწავლებელი, religion teacher (C0604); that he also taught the Qur'an in Georgian is the 2016 volume author's own supposition („სავარაუდოა, რომ…", C0761), not a source statement. He also initiated schools at თხილვანა, ფაჩხა and ჯაბნიძეები; his nephew იუსუფ ბერიძე chaired the სხალთა community that included Oladauri, and his sons-in-law were ჰუსეინ თავდგირიძე and ალისულთან გელაძე (C0906). One unused dated primary raises a question about him: ივერია, 25 July 1895, no. 156, reports a 185-year-old charter produced in a Skhalta land dispute whose clerk was „სოფელ ზულის ხოჯას, ჰაჯი ნური ეფენდი ბერიძეს" — and the 2016 volume's author notes that nowhere else is Nuri called ჰაჯი (C0762); if Iveria is exact, he had made the pilgrimage like his father-in-law Loman. accused and cleared in the 1912 „ნური ბერიძის საქმე"; photographed in the 1913 Batumi deputation. Sakhokia: „ქართულად წმინდად ლაპარაკობს". Surmanidze's list of the Batumi-oblast nobility in 1912 records that Nuri-efendi of ფურტიო was granted the Russian aznaur rank

    It is also said that Tedo Sakhokia recorded more than one legend from the judge (qadi), but unfortunately we have not yet found any trace of them. In the specialist literature (Beridze 2003: 151; Surmanidze 2015, №5) the view has been expressed that the well-known story of the rivalry between Abaza Beridze and the son of Parna Chinkadze (see Sakhokia 1950: 206) must have come precisely from Nuri Khoja: blessed are the believers! We do not think that so wise a man as the effendi would have told a guest the not entirely flattering adventure of one of the members of the Beridze family.

    Besides Loman-efendi Kartsivadze, the members of the delegation were the clergy: the mufti of Keda, Ahmed Khalipashvili, and the qadi of Khulo, Nuri Beridze, and also the laymen Husein Abashidze, Nuri Khimshiashvili, Sherif Khimshiashvili, Tevfik Atabag (Jaqeli), Dursun Tavdgiridze, Tufan Sharvashidze and Ahmed Khalvashi.
