The root ბერი is polysemous. Abuladze's Old Georgian dictionary (1973) glosses it 'elderly person' and 'monk'; ქეგლ (2008) gives 'old person' and 'member of a monastic brotherhood'. Scholars add 'son, boy' (Javakhishvili 1937; cf. Laz ბერე), 'infant' (Marr), a son vowed as a ბერი when children were ill or dying (Koberidze 2023), and in Kartli a newborn called ბერი until its first year (Bardavelidze 1947, via Koberidze 2024). The 'son' sense is the one tied to ბერიძე.
