„ბერიძე“, როგორც სახელი და არა გვარი, გვხვდება მთაში.

rendering, not the wording of the record

The last surname, besides Guria, is found in almost every corner of Georgia: in Racha, in Imereti proper, in Kakheti, and even in Adjara-Lazistan. (In Samegrelo the representatives of this family came over from Guria at the beginning of the 18th century.) "Beridze", as a name and not a surname, is found in the mountains.

Claims

  • B-018 not confirmed mentions

In იმერეთი (Imereti), Georgian reference works describe the ბერიძე family as aznauri (gentry) in the service of the წერეთელი (Tsereteli) princely house and as garrison-men (მეციხოვნეები) of the სვერი (Sveri) fortress; the family is likewise recorded as princely-household aznauri in ლეჩხუმი (Lechkhumi) and სამეგრელო (Samegrelo). Note: this statement appears in the Georgian Wikipedia article without a specific archival citation.

Stated in Georgian reference works and Georgian Wikipedia without an archival citation. The NPLG topo-archaeological entry locates სვერის ციხე and does not connect it with the Beridzes. Same claim as b-203, graded the same.

  • B-003 A mentions

ბერიძე (Beridze) is a simple-stem surname: the personal name ბერი (Beri) plus the patronymic suffix -ძე (-dze, "son"), i.e. "son of Beri". ბერი is attested as an independent male given name in Georgian documents of the 17th century (e.g. a 1616–1621 charter naming a resident of ცაიში) and derives from the common noun ბერი, which in Georgian means "elderly man" and "monk", and which historian ივანე ჯავახიშვილი regarded as an old common-Kartvelian word for "son" (cf. Laz ბერე "child"). Linguist მარიამ კობერიძე (2024) classifies ბერიძე and ბერიშვილი as the "simple-stem (ბერ+ძე)" type, distinct from compound surnames such as კახაბერიძე or სულაბერიძე, where ბერ- is the second element.
