rendering, not the wording of the record

At present the largest number of Beridzes lives in Adjara, but the genealogy of the Beridzes living in Adjara is unstudied, because written documents were destroyed during the rule of the Ottoman Empire. According to oral tradition, the Beridzes (especially the Beridzes of Lower Adjara) were referred to as begs (begi) and aghas (agha), which was the equivalent of the Georgian tavadi (prince) and aznauri (noble).

Claims

  • B-011 D tradition restates

According to an oral tradition of uncertain origin, the ბერიძე (Beridze) families of აჭარა (Adjara) — especially those of ქვემო აჭარა (Lower Adjara) — were remembered as ბეგები (begs), an Ottoman-era title roughly comparable to the Georgian თავადი/აზნაური (tavadi/aznauri) nobility. This is family legend, not documented history: it first appeared as an uncited addition to the Georgian Wikipedia article ბერიძეები in October 2016, and the only academic text repeating it (M. Koberidze, აღმოსავლეთმცოდნეობის მაცნე, 2024) reproduces that Wikipedia passage without naming any informant or record. Written Adjarian records from the Ottoman period are largely lost, so the claim cannot currently be confirmed or refuted.

  • B-030 A restates

The linguist მარიამ კობერიძე (Herald of Oriental Studies, vol. VII, no. 2, 2024) names the destruction of written documents under Ottoman rule as the main obstacle to tracing the genealogy of the ბერიძე family in Adjara.

  • B-105 D tradition restates

    Lower-Adjaran Beridzes were ბეგები

Oral tradition; its academic vehicle (Koberidze 2024) copies an uncited Wikipedia edit of 13 Oct 2016. Softening evidence: Sakhokia (1897, via Baramidze 2021) lists ბერიძეები among Lower Adjara's notable families. Against it: the 1912 Batumi Oblast Commission (protocol No. 182) recognised the beg rank at ზესოფელი for the Avalianis, and no document names a Beridze beg.
