ბერიძე (Beridze) belongs to a wider family of Georgian surnames built on the root ბერ-ი (beri) — among them კახაბერიძე (Kakhaberidze), გულაბერიძე (Gulaberidze), ღოღობერიძე (Ghoghoberidze), ჯანბერიძე (Janberidze), ჯოხთაბერიძე (Jokhtaberidze), ბერსენაძე (Bersenadze) and ბერასძე (Berasdze). According to onomastic research (Mariam Koberidze, 2023, drawing on I. Maisuradze), the compound names such as კახაბერი or გოგიბერი were formed from a man's given name plus ბერ-ი used as a suffix meaning "male, boy", and these compound names later became surnames in their own right — კახაბერისძე is already attested in the medieval Synodikon of Tbeti (ტბეთის სულთა მატიანე). The shared root is therefore linguistic, not proof of common descent. A separate oral tradition from Meskheti and Guria, recorded on Georgian Wikipedia and traced to Kveli Chkhataraishvili's 1959 study "გურიის სამთავრო", holds that the კახაბერიძე and გულაბერიძე families split off from the ბერიძე line, and that a king Giorgi III granted one Beridze the name კახაბერიძე; this should be read as a family legend rather than documented genealogy. No source connects გოგიბერიძე (Gogiberidze) or კობერიძე (Koberidze) to the Beridze family beyond the ბერ- root.
