Claims

  • B-011 D According to an oral tradition of uncertain origin, the ბერიძე (Beridze) families of აჭარა (Adjara) — especially those of ქვემო აჭარა (Lower Adjara) — were remembered as ბეგები (begs), an Ottoman-era title roughly comparable to the Georgian თავადი/აზნაური (tavadi/aznauri) nobility. This is family legend, not documented history: it first appeared as an uncited addition to the Georgian Wikipedia article ბერიძეები in October 2016, and the only academic text repeating it (M. Koberidze, აღმოსავლეთმცოდნეობის მაცნე, 2024) reproduces that Wikipedia passage without naming any informant or record. Written Adjarian records from the Ottoman period are largely lost, so the claim cannot currently be confirmed or refuted.
