Passage A.343

pending · 2026-09-16Context

rendering, not the wording of the record

Many people here already know Orhan Beridze: he is a Georgian living in Turkey who won back his historical surname through the courts. At a time when some Georgians abroad trade their Georgian surname for foreign citizenship, we think it necessary to write about this fact specially.

ორჰან ბერიძე (Orhan Beridze), a Georgian from the muhajir-descended community of Giresun, Turkey, had his ancestral surname legally restored: by a Turkish court ruling dated 23 May 2017, ორჰან შარდაღი (Orhan Şardağ), registered in the village of Damudere, Bulancak district, was permitted to change his surname to ბერიძე. He described the ruling as his "second birth" („მეგონა, მეორედ დავიბადე და წინაპრები გავაცოცხლე") in a 2020 interview with kartuli.kvira.ge, and the Georgian scholar Natela Jimsheleishvili, writing in the proceedings of the 2017 Istanbul symposium on the 1877–78 Caucasian migrations (published by the Gürcistan Dostluk Derneği, 2019), records having personally witnessed this official restoration of the surname Beridze, quoting his verse „აწი ჩემს მომავალს დაებადოს, ბერიძთა აღვადგინე ჯიში".
