On the right flank, by the Achadara railway platform, a small group of fighters led by the first deputy head of the Military Police Administration, E. Beridze, attacked straight off the march the Abkhaz formations that were advancing towards the city. In a short, fierce exchange of fire some of the Abkhaz surrendered, but the other, larger

part, taking cover behind the embankment and the houses, opened a hurricane of fire from automatic weapons and grenade launchers. Elgudzha Beridze, Anatoly Lavrinenko and Teimuraz Gilantia died heroically in the battle.
